Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) is an insect that lives on cacti primarily in South and North America. Cochineal was used to dye textiles by the Aztec and Maya people as early as the 2nd Century BC.
Weld (Reseda luteola) is the most lightfast of the yellow dyes. Native to Europe and Western Asiait was later introduced to North America. Weld was used as a dye by ancient tapestry weavers in Central Asia, Turkey and Europe.
